Flyer was born five years ago at Come Again Farm, where she lived happily with her dam Flying Loose until she was weaned, at which time the farm came to financial difficulties and she had to be sold on. When we heard the young daughter of Merry Bay King was for sale, we just had to have her. The moment we laid eyes on her, it was a done deal. Flyer was ours. We brought her back to GHS, where she frolicked in the pastures with nine other weanlings including, for just a few weeks, her half brother Impressario.
While Flyers two year old season was impressive, she was unfortunately outshone by Gorgeous George and Striking Motion. It wasn't until her three year old season that the filly stood out. she began with a few second places, then won the Spring Cup G5 Turf*. It was then we took a true interest in the filly, and she started a new training schedule that quickly had her winning like crazy. By the end of her three year old season, she had won her way all the way to up grade one, with a total of 11 wins, 7 of them being *HOTY selection races, including the Melbourne Cup*. Considering her massive amount of effort, and considering she had come all the way from grade five to grade one in a single season, Flyer was named Y7 Filly of The Year.
Her four year old season however was the year Flyer dominated the turf. She began the year with a win in the Spring Cup G1 Turf*, and finished with the Breeder's Cup Turf*, coming home with 11 wins once more, 9 of them *HOTY Selection races, including a second consecutive win in the Melbourne Cup*, a win in the huge Universal Cup*, Dream Cup* Pegasus Stakes* and Full Moon Derby*. She finished the year with multiple HOTY awards, and was crowned Y8 Racehorse Of The Year, Y8 Filly Of The Year, Y8 Best Older Mare and Y8 Best Grade One. The only award missing was Best Turf Horse! We decided to run Flyer one last time for a win in the Unicorn Horn Classic in Y9, but unfortunately the mare didn't win, coming in a close third place.
Throughout her career, Flyer placed just five times out of the top three. Four of these were fourth places, and the fifth was a fifth place in her two year old season! She retired with a record of 59-25-16-13, which has a win/place/show percentage of 91.5%. Very impressive. As a Horse of The Year award winner, and with a record like hers, Flyer deserves to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame in recognition of her amazing efforts and heart throughout her racing career.
